Hi, did you run the OpenemmInstall.sh using
sudo bin/OpenemmInstall.sh
?
You need to do this, then choose 4 - install and update, and skip all parts installed until you reach the backend part.
That's how it worked for me.

I did a re-install with Centos 8.2 - seems that there is no upgrade path from Centos 7.

With the latest versions of OpenEmm on CentOS 8 I habe no defunct processes any more.
SOLVED

I now edited emm.properties manually and the system is working.

However, what is the recommended way to avoid differences between the database entries and the text file?

And maybe try to use the English tools - you could have an issue with the languages within ESXi.
