OpenEMM hosting

You need a dedicated or at least virtual root server. Best OS choice is RHEL compatible CentOS because you can use the RPM package, but Suse/OpenSuse works too (choose tarball). Some users even operate OpenEMM on Debian.

Thanks

Is VPS (virtual private server) also good for OpenEMM?

Is there anyone used the "VDS Start" (US$16/month) service of Best Hosting (http://www.webhostingru.com) for successful installation and running of OpenEMM ?

Or other VPS hosting service providers?

Pls. help giving your comments

Thanks!

I don't know if virtual hosting will work. I send about 17K emails a day and that keeps a (cheap) dedicated machine busy all day every day.

Thanks Jim for your information!

Would you mind let me know the hardware configuration of your OpenEMM server?

Thanks!

I'm sending about 17k emails a day from this set up and the server doesn't seem to have a problem. You may want to read this thread --
http://www.openemm.org/forums/ftopic37.html

Control Panel-Webmin (I really didn't use Webmin much, but it's on the server)
IP Space-1 IP Address
Memory-1 GB
Monthly Transfer-2000 GB
Operating System-CentOS 4
Port Speed-10 Mbit Port
Primary Hard Drive -80 GB
Processor-Athlon XP 2100+

I'm paying $99 a month at www.serverbeach.com for this set up, although it looks like they dropped the price to $89 a month:
https://shop.serverbeach.com/powerline_ ... &proc=2100
I'll have to make a phone call on Monday... I've been using them for a few years now and haven't had any problems.

I also use www.hosting.com for a different server for a client (it's a Fedora / Cold Fusion set up, OpenEMM isn't used on that machine), hosting.com has got more customer support and are quick to reply to any questions or problems so they're better to use if you need more hand holding with server admin type of jobs. I don't know if they'd support OpenEMM, you could give them a call and ask.

Years ago I used Communitech.net and they were great. Then back in about 2000 they got bought out by Interland
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interland
And everything fell apart. I will never buy anything from Interland again, they have the worst support I've ever had to deal with.

Thanks Jim for your information!

As, right now, I am just looking for a place to have a test try on OpenEMM, and not like you already have steady business to support US$100/mth, so...

do you have any rough guest on the emails rate, e.g. 5000 emails/24hr ??, if the "VDS Start" (US$16/month) service of Best Hosting (http://www.webhostingru.com) is used?

Thanks!

I think the email rate depends on the server you're on and how much of the hardware you're allowed to use on it if you're a virtual user.

I haven't used OpenEMM on a virtual hosting account so I'm not the best one to answer the question. I really don't know if you'll be able to use OpenEMM on a $16 a month account --- and if you do get it up and running, I think you may run into some problems with the bounce management side of things...

Is it possible to config OpenEMM to schedule email batches and with a pause (say 30seconds) between batches?

Will Scheduled emails batches solve the bounce management problem?

By scheduling emails in batches of, say 400 emails/batches, will the cheap hardware response fast enough to handle the bounced emails?

Actually, I believe that the shared VPS service also have limitation on number of emails being sent within, say one hour. Shared hosting does have such limitation, e.g. 400 emails/hour maximum.

Any ideas on how to setup scheduled email batches?

Or will OpenEMM provide an option to do so in the future release?

The problem might be with permissions - you won't need batches, the application is very light on the machine.

I'm using Bytemark Atom server and pay £620 per year. Not maybe the cheapest but been good service so far.

We also use Bytemark

We have been with Bytemark for a while.

Good service, and you get real servers with root access. We run OpenEMM on an Ubuntu 8.10 Virtual Machine. It is fine for our needs.
