No emails / no errors

For the last 2 days I'm trying to get a basic 6.2. OpenEMM install to work on Ubuntu 10.04. WebApps work - but no emails are generated or send to test users or others.
There are NO errors in any log files and the only strange thing I'm doing is that my DB and OpenEMM install are on different servers. I have updated:
emm.properties - jdbc section to reflect this
Do I need to change anything else? Does anyone have any idea how to increase logging so at least something tells me what is wrong?
