OpenEMM database config?

Hi,
I have taken over an older OpenEMM installation (v. 5.5.1), and the sending of emails is rather unstable.
I have no clue why (yet), so I have a few questions I could not find answers for, in the documentation:
1) Where do you configure the database?
I cannot find any configuration file anywhere
2) Is it possible to empty out old mails inside the OpenEMM database?
I can see that it sends out old emails too. Emails from older mailings.
3) Can I delete some old data directly in the database? Or should I do it
in the OpenEMM admin GUI?
I hope you guys can give me some hints
