Normal Sendmail functions cease

Has anybody experienced this?
When I run OpenEMM, half the time it interferes with normal Sendmail functions on the server, stopping normal mail delivery, but works okay when sending out mail. When I restart Sendmail, it functions normally again.

I think I understand, from reading several posts, that this problem is related to INPUT_MAIL_FILTER in the sendmail config. But I don't understand how to get it running again. When I try to send mail as a regular user I get this
"4.3.2 Try Again Later"
Can one of the admins shed more light on configuring this properly?

This is definitely a one sided conversation...
Anyhow, I found this in /var/log/maillog
Aug 17 14:12:31 earth sendmail[28989]: l7HLCV7l028989: Milter (bav): error connecting to filter: Connection refused by /home/openemm/var/run/bav.sock
Aug 17 14:12:31 earth sendmail[28989]: l7HLCV7l028989: Milter (bav): to error state
Aug 17 14:12:31 earth sendmail[28989]: l7HLCV7l028989: Milter: initialization failed, temp failing commands
and on startup
Aug 17 14:59:42 earth sendmail[31989]: l7HLxf1I031989: Milter (bav): to error state
Aug 17 14:59:42 earth sendmail[31989]: l7HLxf1I031989: Milter (bav): init failed to open
Aug 17 14:59:42 earth sendmail[31989]: l7HLxf1I031989: Milter (bav): to error state
Aug 17 14:59:42 earth sendmail[31989]: l7HLxf1I031989: Milter: initialization failed, temp failing commands
Anyhow, I tried disabling sendmail on startup and letting OpenEMM do all the work, but still no dice.
