De-duping when running a mailshot

Hi,
I am using OpenEMM to track booster/vaccination reminders for a group of veterinary clinics. Each record in the database is defined as unique by the pet's ID but as you can imagine, some owners have more than one pet and so the same email address will appear against different records.
This is fine for reminders as we pick out who to email by a date range and some customers will receive multiple emails if more than one pet is due to come in, but we also want to use the data for other purposes - say, for example, to mail all customers in a particular region and in this case we only want to email each matching address once.
Is there a way to de-dupe a mailshot as it's being processed? The ideal option would simply be a check box in the 'mailings' definition to only allow each email address once, even if there are multiple matches in the target group - either that or an option when generating the target group.
Any ideas?
Thanks
