Cannot get date targets to work

This is getting frustrating!
We can now import all our data but not use it for targetting (5.4.0rc2).
I have two date fields in the data (imported fully as dd.MM.yyyy eg: 25.04.2008) and I have defined a basic target group using:
vacdate = 2008 YYYY or vacdate2 = 2008 YYYY
and also tried
vacdate = 200804 YYYYMM or vacdate2 = 2000804 YYYYMM
Which I would expect to create a mailing list with any date field having the year 2008 or one for April 2008 but I get empty mailing lists.
I did have some success with using vacdate > 20080331 AND vacdate < 20080501 to pull out April dates, but because we need to check two date fields you can't do the logic with the available number of brackets and AND and ORs.
It seems that date comparisons on partial fields don't work?
Any ideas - we are so close but I am being pressured to abandon OpenEmm by the end of the week if I cannot make it work.
