It depends! Do you operate a root server? What operating system and version are you using?

It's on a Linux virtual server where I have FTP access.

A virtual server is not a problem, but you must have root access.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by root access. When I use my FTP program, the first "entry point" to the server is shown as "/" in the address field. Is this then the root area?
