Mailing Lists

When I go back and look at old mailings, some say the mailing list is the default list, and others say that the mailing list is the actual list it should be sent to. How can you make sure the mailing was sent to the right list? Does this all revolve around the number of the recipients and the size of the list it should have been sent to? When I look back to our mailing lists, it is split half and half. Some say that it has resorted back to the default list, and others say that it has been sent to the list it should have been sent to? Does anyone have an answer for me on this or understand what I am talking about? I am a bit preplexed.
